Counselling

Is counselling different from coaching? Not significantly, in my opinion. There may be a difference in terms of what clients want to talk about, e.g. grief, depression, relationship issues etc. However, in both cases, a person has the opportunity to work on their difficulties in a safe environment and to receive assistance in approaching a problem (and life) in a way that is more helpful or meaningful to them.

Coaches who want to distance themselves from the therapy world often claim that coaching is present or future-oriented, while therapy is based on the past. This is, in my opinion, a gross over-simplification. Ignoring the past is difficult and not necessarily advisable. The good news is, however, that there are ways of looking at the stories of our lives that are enlightening, empowering and enjoyable.
